Facebook Tracking

Practical Steps to Protect Your Online Privacy

With its vast user base, Facebook has built an environment perfectly suited to tracking online behavior, often gathering details about your activities both on and off the app. By regularly updating data preferences, and deleting cookies, you can limit how much of your online activity Facebook captures and stop Facebook from tracking you. If the idea of being constantly followed online makes you uneasy, we’ll show you how to take control and minimize Facebook’s tracking through straightforward steps.

Why Facebook Tracks Your Data

Facebook collects data through cookies and third-party sites, often gathering information even when you’re logged off. These small files store logged details about your browsing, while third-party sites and app developers feed additional data back to Facebook, making it a powerful engine for personalized ads. This information includes:

  • Content you create: Posts, comments, and even audio messages
  • Camera and photo access: Through Meta’s camera feature and your camera roll
  • Search history and metadata for all interactions
  • Device information and app preferences
  • Friends, followers, and groups you interact with

If you use iOS 16+ on an iPhone or iPad, try running Safety Check to see what apps have access to your data. Just go to Settings > Safety Check > Manage Sharing & Access to manage or end data access permissions.

Steps to Stop Facebook from Tracking You

Worried about the depth of information Facebook collects? Here are actionable steps to minimize Facebook’s tracking of your online habits:

  • Run Facebook’s Privacy Checkup
    • Facebook offers a Privacy Checkup tool that helps you review and adjust your privacy settings.
    • Go to your profile picture, select Settings & Privacy > Privacy Checkup.
    • This tool will walk you through areas where Facebook collects your data, allowing you to adjust each setting as you go.
  • Clear Your Activity Log
    • Facebook keeps a log of everything you search for, and deleting this history can improve your privacy.
    • Tap your profile picture or the three horizontal lines > Settings & Privacy > Activity Log.
    • Select Logged Actions and Other Activity > Search History, then click Clear Searches.
  • Adjust Ad Preferences
    • Facebook uses your data to show personalized ads. You can control what data is used in this process by modifying your ad preferences.
    • Go to your profile picture > Settings & Privacy > Settings > Ads.
    • Review and adjust your Ad Settings to limit the data Facebook can use for ad targeting.
  • Turn Off Off-Facebook Activity Tracking
    • Facebook can track your activity on other websites through the Off-Facebook Activity tool, which you can disable.
    • Select your profile picture > Settings & Privacy > Settings > Accounts Center.
    • Click Your Activity Off Facebook > Manage Future Activity and choose to disconnect future tracking.
  • Turn Off Location Tracking
    • Location tracking is often used to deliver targeted ads and location-based suggestions. Disable this if you don’t want Facebook to know your precise location.
    • From Settings & Privacy > Settings, go to Privacy and click Location to turn off location tracking.
  • Unlink Third-Party Apps
    • Many apps offer quick login through Facebook, but this often results in data sharing. Unlink third-party apps to regain control.
    • Go to your profile picture > Settings & Privacy > Settings > Apps and Websites.
    • Under Preferences, next to Apps, Websites, and Games, select Turn Off to disconnect apps from your account.
  • Consider Deleting Your Account
    • As a last resort, deleting your Facebook account can entirely stop Facebook from tracking you. While drastic, this step is effective if you’re serious about ending data collection.

Keep Your Data Safe

The online world is increasingly interconnected, and social media giants like Facebook continuously collect as much data as possible. However, with identity theft costing Americans billions each year, staying vigilant and protective over your data is more crucial than ever. By following these privacy-focused steps, you can browse with greater confidence, keeping your information secure and limiting Facebook’s ability to track your activity.
